What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency
If water is running where it should not be and you cannot stop it, that is an emergency. So is anything that makes the house unsafe or unusable. The clearest cases are a burst or split supply line, a water heater dumping its tank, sewage coming up through a floor drain or tub, a main line backup that puts every fixture out of service, and the smell of gas near an appliance or meter. Shut the Water Off Before You Do Anything Else

Under a sink or behind a toilet there is an angle stop on the wall: turn it clockwise until it stops. For a leak you cannot isolate, find the main shutoff. On most homes in this area it sits in a box near the street or on the exterior wall on the side of the house closest to the meter, and it turns clockwise or a quarter turn to close. If the leak is at the water heater, close the cold inlet valve on top of the tank and shut off the gas or breaker to it. Older gate valves can seize or break if forced, so if a valve will not move, stop and let us handle it rather than snapping the stem.

Usually not. A single slow fixture can wait for a scheduled drain cleaning visit. It becomes urgent when several fixtures back up at once or water rises in a tub or floor drain, because that points at the main line.
Can you fix it permanently the same night?
